What is the difference between KVM and OpenVZ VPS?

CrazyVPS offers both KVM and OpenVZ VPS. OpenVZ and KVM are both hypervisors that allow servers to be enabled for virtualization. OpenVZ is an open source project by Virtuozzo, while KVM is another open source project.

OpenVZ is container-based virtualization. This means that each VPS is just a container running on the host node's kernel. Generally, this is fine and it will not cause issues. In some cases, however, where custom software needs to be installed, a different kernel may be required, and that software could not be loaded as a result.

is fully virtualized. The VPS operates like its own physical server, meaning that the host node cannot access the data within it. KVM has its own hard disk created, and it can load its own kernel. KVM stands for Kernel-based Virtual Machine. KVM is a more powerful option because it fully dedicates the hardware to clients.
